A South Sudanese rebel official attached to exiled leader Riek Machar has accused government of aiding rebels loyal to renegade general Thomas Cirillo Swaka to attack their positions in the restive Southern region.
Col. Lam Paul Gabriel said Swaka’s National Salvation Front (NASF) fighters were aided by a top South Sudan general in the region to attack their positions in Wuji in Yei River on Saturday.
“Gen Hakim Elia, a government military officer was discovered to be the one supplying NAS forces with reinforcements from the regime in Juba,” Lam said.
Lam added however that the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) managed to repulse the attack, in which they “were scattered leaving behind one dead body and several injured.”
South Sudan military officials were unavailable for comment on the matter.
Machar’s SPLA-IO and Swaka’s NAS are both fighting the government of President Salva Kiir but are at loggerheads with each other over control of the Equatorian region.
