Suspected al-Shabaab Militants Ambush Kenya Army Convoy in North Eastern County of Mandera

A Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) convoy was ambushed after their vehicle overran an explosive in a Town, Mandera County, in the country’s North Eastern province.

The convoy was responding to an early morning attack where suspected Al-Shabaab militants destroyed a communication mast.

Regional Police Commander Job Boronjo said a vehicle leading the convoy was hit by an explosive planted on a road.

“Something has happened about an hour ago but am yet to get details because the night incident destroyed communication in the area,” said Mr Boronjo.

A source who spoke to the Nation said there could be casualties since KDF have been engaged in a fire exchange with the militants since morning.

Boronjo said the gunfire followed after the explosion.

Lafey police boss (OCPD) Bosita Omukolongolo had earlier said the militants attacked and destroyed a communication mast at 2 am.

“There was heavy fire exchange between the attackers and our officers guarding the area but no casualty has been reported,” he said.

On June 26, another communication mast at Damasa in Lafey was destroyed by Al-Shabaab militants who ran into neighbouring Somalia.

“We are yet to know how many they were since the incident happened at night but all our officers at the scene can be accounted for,” said Omukolongolo.

Authorities in the area said it was difficult to confirm if there were casualties since communication had been disrupted.
