Uganda Opposition Leader Kizza Besigye to be arraigned in Kampala court over Treason

Uganda political icon and founder of leading opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Dr. Kizza Besigye will today May 18, 2016 appear in Kampala Court to answer fresh treason charges.

The court appearance comes on a backdrop of an arrest after Besigye made a sudden appearance in the city’s central business district and addressed an impromptu crowd a day to the swearing of Uganda 30 year leader Yoweri Museveni.

He was arrested and airlifted to Northern District of Moroto, over 400 miles away from Kampala. A video circulated on social media on the same day also shows Besigye swearing in as president of Uganda.

He was charged with treason in Moroto Chief Magistrate’s Court and had been remanded at Moroto prison until May 25.

Nakawa Chief Magistrate, James Eremye, issued a production warrant to Luzira prison officials to produce Dr Besigye in court at 9am today.

The Uganda Judicial senior communications officer, Solomon Muyita told the media in Kampala Besigye’s appearance in court today is meant to read to him the treason charges afresh.

“Nakawa Court has issued a production warrant for Dr Besigye to appear tomorrow (today). He is appearing so that he is formally arraigned and charged afresh,” he told Daily Monitor by telephone yesterday.

However, Besigye’s lawyer Yusuf Nsibambi said his Legal Team has not been officially served with any court document inviting them to appear before Nakawa court today. He even alleged that Dr Besigye’s transfer to Luzira prison was not communicated to them officially.

“We are just hearing this information from the media. The State has not yet communicated to us officially about his appearance before Nakawa court tomorrow (today). As his lawyers, we are not sure whether we shall even appear there since we have not been invited,” Nsibambi said.
